Top Scottish Youth Players Season 1999/2000
1.
Name: Alex Notman
Current Club: Manchester United
Representative Honours: U20
Date of Birth: 10/12/1979
Position: Forward
Previous Clubs: Aberdeen (loan)
Comments: Joined Man Utd in the 1995/96 season as an apprentice , scoring 21 goals in 26 games for Man Utd’s B Team and 3 in 2 appearances for the A Team. Notman signed a professional contract in 1996 and spearheaded the youth team’s bid to win the 1997 FA Youth Cup. Compared to Paul Scholes in terms of his playing style, Notman has failed to break into the first team as yet , and in May 1999 he was sent to Aberdeen on a 3 month loan spell. Playing for a team like Manchester United , Notman is sure to make a big impact on the domestic and international scene in the near future.

2.
Name: Barry Ferguson
Current Club: Glasgow Rangers
Representative Honours: U21 , Full International
Date of Birth: 2/2/1978
Position: Central Midfielder

Comments: A product of the Ibrox youth policy , Barry Ferguson has been described as the hottest property in Scottish football. Ferguson joined Rangers as a schoolboy and joined the groundstaff when he was 16. In the 1996/97 season , he made his first team debut in the last game of the season against Hearts and was voted man of the match. Under new coach Dick Advocaat , Barry was handed a regular starting role in the centre of midfield. An integral part of the 1998/99 treble winning season , he has now won several caps for his country and has been the subject of much attention from the major european clubs. Despite this , Ferguson , rated at £15 million , recently signed a six year deal.

3.
Name: Craig Dargo
Current Club: Raith Rovers
Representative Honours: U21
Date of Birth: 3/1/1978
Position: Forward
Previous Clubs: None
Comments: After a poor 1998/99 season when he was not able to get the support from midfield that he relishes , Craig Dargo is still the player to watch this season. Under a new coach , Dargo’s future is looking brighter though. His appearances for the Scotland U21 team have been impressive , scoring many times for his country . Dargo is sure to attract the attention of many larger clubs if he could only get a decent service from midfield.

4.

Position: Goalkeeper

Date of Birth: 18/8/1980
Position: Forward

Comments: Rated as one of Celtic’s and indeed one of Scotland’s brightest young hopes , many believe that Mark Burchill is the future of Scottish strikers. Despite not being given a chance last season under Jozef Venglos , Mark has made a somewhat quiet start to the season , but has been given more of a chance due to the injury to Henrik Larsson. This season saw Mark’s introduction to International football , but has yet to score for his country. If Mark Burchill managed to hold down a regular first team place , I’m sure that he would attract the attention of the larger European clubs , due to his lightning-quick pace and his eye for goal.
